Laing O’Rourke commits to Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) adoption
14.10.24Laing O’Rourke has announced its commitment to voluntary reporting of nature-related issues in line with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations.
The announcement was made this week at the Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney; an event hosted by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) in Australia that brought together leaders from government, corporate sectors, research and environmental organisations and Indigenous Peoples.
TNFD is a market-led, science-based and government-backed initiative providing organisations with the tools to act on evolving nature-related issues. The goal of the Taskforce is to support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes, aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework. The construction industry has a critical role to play in protecting and restoring nature through its work, and the opportunity to make an important difference.
Laing O’Rourke is one of just 17 global engineering and construction companies to have become a TNFD Adopter, and is committed to making its first disclosure following its 2025 financial year (UK financial year April 2025 – March 2026).
In September 2023, the TNFD published a set of disclosure recommendations and guidance that encourage and enable businesses to assess, report and act on their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities, in a similar way to the established Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) framework.
TNFD Adopters represent a diverse range of sectors, including energy, construction, health and wellness, real estate investment, financial services, food and beverage, technology infrastructure, aviation, forestry, infrastructure, telecommunications, and supply chain logistics.
Madeleina Loughrey-Grant, Group Director for Legal, Procurement and Sustainability at Laing O’Rourke, said: “We are pleased to have made this commitment, having long understood that the decisions we make as an organisation have an impact on nature and worked to minimise them. By reporting in line with TNFD recommendations, we are challenging ourselves to keep doing better.”
