The grand reimagining of the former Whiteleys department store in London will form the centrepiece for the major regeneration of Queensway and the wider Bayswater area.

Redevelopment of the historic Whiteleys Shopping Centre will create a vibrant destination for the community. The redevelopment includes 139 world-class modern residences, 20 new shops, cafes and restaurants, a central public courtyard, a cinema, a gym and London's flagship Six Senses hotel and spa.

At the heart of the retail vision will be a new public courtyard that is accessed through a retail arcade at the historic entrance to Whiteleys. The courtyard will be lined with retail units and restaurants, alongside entrances to leisure units that will include a new cinema, located at basement level.

On the levels of the building above the retail units a wide range of residential units will be created. These will include 1, 2, 3 and 4-bed apartments comprising a mix of corner units, duplexes and penthouses, which, given their setting in this historic building, will be like no other in London. A series of terraces and balconies ensure that outdoor space is available for the apartments.

A good mix of uses is key to bringing any public space, street or neighbourhood to life. The combination of a hotel with the residential and retail uses helps ensure that the development attracts different types of people at different times of the day, not only to bring The Whiteley itself to life, but also to provide new customers and visitors to the shops along Queensway and in the local area. Furthermore, the new hotel will be as much a destination for the local community as it will be for the guests, since the ancillary uses, such as its restaurant, bar and lobby, will be open to everyone.

The proposed development will protect the site’s heritage and enhance the retail offer while also creating a pedestrian-friendly Queensway.

Laing O’Rourke is proud to be delivering The Whiteley, a landmark building that once redeveloped will create a vibrant new destination for the local community and for visitors to London. An offsite-manufacturing approach will be instrumental in our delivery.

Many of the components such as core walls, columns and bespoke façade elements are being manufactured at our Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction in Nottinghamshire before being transported for on-site assembly. This approach provides greater certainty for our client and helps to minimise disruption for the local community.”
