Even a significant change in scope, disruptions from a construction project next door, and a global pandemic were not enough to prevent this hospital build coming in on time and on budget.
The 11-storey hospital in Liverpool, delivering a wide range of specialist cancer care, has transformed the experiences of tens of thousands of cancer sufferers and their families, in the Liverpool region.
How it happened
With a goal of enabling the very finest care for cancer patients, but working on a highly constrained site, at Laing O’Rourke we had to draw from our industry leading experience in the delivery of major healthcare projects.
Over the last decade we’ve had a continual pipeline of hospital delivery, enabling us to develop powerful capabilities around Design for Manufacture and Assembly. This offsite manufacturing ability means we’re now able to deliver 600-plus bed hospital projects in 98 weeks, halving the time in which we completed our first hospital in 2010.
Each project pushes the boundaries, employing greater collaboration with stakeholders, more advanced digital planning and design, and ever greater quality of delivery. From flawless air filtration systems to the insulation functionality of facades, and from onsite sustainable electricity production to significant employment opportunities for local workforces, we provide certainty through experience.
The Winter Garden is a very special space for patients and staff. It’s a very uplifting space. Sometimes our patients are here all day, sometimes they’re here for a few weeks, so for them to feel safe and comfortable in a clinical environment, is fantastic.

The result
The building is rated BREEAM Excellent and of exceptional quality.
Dynamic control systems help the building perform more than 50% better than the Department of Health’s guideline targets. More than 30% of electrical demand is generated onsite by low and zero carbon systems such as photovoltaic panels, leading to a 24% reduction in regulated CO2 emissions.
Delivered on time and on budget despite significant change in scope midway through the design, which required a redesign of most of the building and the addition of three more floors, this state-of-the-art hospital offers cutting edge care to people who most need it.
