Building an accessible and integrated train station to meet the needs of busy, dynamic and growing precincts.

Transport customers can now enjoy enhanced accessibility at Sydney's fifth busiest train station with a new Southern Concourse that adds six new stairs and lifts and two new station entrances to improve connectivity between key destinations, including South Eveleigh, Carriageworks and the University of Sydney.

The 103rd project delivered by the Novo Rail Alliance, a partnership between Laing O'Rourke, the John Holland Group, Aurecon and client, Transport for NSW, the Redfern Station Upgrade improves accessibility to Platforms 1-10 for passengers with a disability, limited mobility, parents or carers with prams and customers with luggage.

The Redfern Station Upgrade marks the end of Novo Rail's 14-year long journey to deliver alliance-driven design-and-construct contracts for junctions, traction supply upgrades, stabling, overhead wiring and rail signalling works. During this time, the Alliance has employed more than 1,600 people and delivered more than $1.5 billion in project value across New South Wales.

The project benefits

The key features of the project include:

• A new six metre-wide Southern Concourse;
• Six new stairs and lifts from the Southern Concourse to Platforms 1-10;
• Two new station entrances at Marian Street and Little Eveleigh Street;
• New and upgraded shared zones surrounding station entrances;
• Successful relocation of a heritage building to allow the new stairs and lift on Platform 1 to be built; and
• Resurfacing and tactile installation across 10 station platforms.

Sustainability and innovation

During construction, the project team implemented several initiatives to reduce the impact of the carbon footprint of construction operations, such as by using biodiesel generators with battery storage to power the site office; hybrid solar/diesel lighting towers; solar panels to recharge power tools; greenhouse gas emission offsets purchased through GreenFleet; and a 5,000L rainwater tank to reduce water consumption at the site office.

The design of the Redfern Station Upgrade embeds environmental sustainability into the performance of Redfern Station post-construction. Examples include reducing carbon emission-intense building materials through Reconophalt pavement mix in the new carpark; reduce amounts of reinforcing steel across the project; and cement with a high percentage of supplementary cementitious material and recycled content. Additionally, the new toilet facilities feature water efficient fixtures and fittings, and a 27,000L rain water tank under the Marian Street entrance will collect rainwater for reuse in the station bathrooms.
