Laing O'Rourke managed the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade, which is a key arterial road that provides a direct link for east-west travel, connecting road users to local Victorian suburbs in the Mernda and Doreen area.

The Bridge Inn Road Upgrade involves the duplication of Bridge Inn Road from two to four lanes over 3km extending from Schotters Road to 250 metres west of Yan Yean Road, and from two to six lanes over 0.5km from Plenty Road to Schotters Road.

Awarded to Laing O’Rourke in November 2021, major construction commenced in mid-2022, with initial completion planned for 2025. Through collaboration with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke achieved program efficiencies through the identification and implementation of technical and delivery initiatives, resulting in the early completion of all major works by the end of 2024.

Laing O'Rourke managed the design and construction of Bridge Inn Road Upgrade.

The project saw strong Sustainability outcomes, including:

  • 2% reduction in project lifecycle emissions;
  • 3% reduction in GHG impacts of construction materials;
  • Spent $10.5 million on Social Procurement at project completion, exceeding target by 1.4%;
  • Of this spend, $4.4 million is with Victorian Aboriginal businesses, a 0.8% increase on target.

The project will bring the following benefits to the community:

  • Improved traffic flow and travel times;
  • Improved access to Mernda Station;
  • Enhanced connectivity to residential developments and employment opportunities in the north;
  • Provide easier access to Mernda Town Centre;
  • Easier and safer to walk or cycle around your local area;
  • Lowered risk and severity of crashes by installing safety barriers.

As part of the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade in Melbourne’s north, our construction partner Laing O’Rourke has worked very closely with our new neighbours, Ivanhoe Grammar School to ensure that any disruptive works are programmed around the school curriculum and their all-important examination periods. To ensure that impacts were kept to a minimum, Laing O’Rourke adjusted their construction program to ensure that high impact works to build the new lanes in front of the school were undertaken during the school holidays, to ensure that this section of road was reopened for the commencement of the new school term. A great outcome for the school and their students, and a clear demonstration of Laing O’Rourke’s commitment to working with local stakeholders to ensure impacts are minimised as much as possible.
