Across six remote sites, Laing O’Rourke delivered earthworks and roads, structural and civil works, electrical systems, equipment rooms and work camps for essential gas processing facilities.

Not so long ago, six complex projects across a state would have been considered individual projects connected only by a client and a common procurement plan.

Thanks to our leading experience in digital engineering, the construction sequencing for each gas processing facility site was intimately related to the others, making the most of a host of efficiencies, collaborations, shared knowledge and cost savings.

This approach resulted in significant schedule improvements, with construction crews able to use the virtual model to optimise methodology and sequencing while maintaining safe work practices.

How it happened

Laing O'Rourke adopted a deeply inclusive and collaborative approach with APLNG and all stakeholders to deliver the gas processing facilities across the six sites.

This included:

  • Implementing a structured project governance team to support the project
  • Integrating quality and completions to support efficient pre-commissioning and commissioning activities
  • Coordinating smart and efficient logistics solutions
  • Implementing a clear commercial strategy focused on reducing processing time, accurately capturing change, and efficient payment for all stakeholders
  • Minimising human capital issues through closer engagement with the workforce, and active development of leadership skills
  • Integrating the commissioning and completions teams and drawing on the expertise within APLNG operations to provide best-for-project outcomes at each site

These resulted in early delivery of all key milestones.

The project in numbers
  • $600 million project value
  • 1600 people housed in accommodation, constructed by Laing O’Rourke, during the project
  • 26 Siemens compressors installed
  • Compressor foundations optimised by enhancing slab pour methodology to reduce height from 3.2 metres to 1.8 metres and reducing the pile cap size using a new, detailed, structural calculation methodology
  • Our right-first-time culture, driven by digital, resulted in just 2.7 punch-list items identified on average during sub-system walk-downs
  • The ongoing gas project will create 6000 jobs during peak construction phase and 1000 jobs during its operation
