Transport for New South Wales accepted the Novo Rail project proposal for the upgrade of Wynyard, one of the busiest stations on Sydney’s rail network.

The project includes an overhaul of the concourse and ticket area to make it easier for customers to move in and around the station.

Project Director Ben Nicol said Novo Rail was chosen for its demonstrated ability to work closely with the client, understand their requirements and constraints, and to deliver the project within the desired timeframe.

Wynyard Station is the third busiest in Sydney, with around 110,000 people using the station every weekday. Early work began in September 2014 and the main upgrade works of the station is now underway to transform an ageing facility into a new gateway for Sydney’s financial district, Barangaroo and the western CBD. The project is due for completion next year.

At its peak, a workforce of around 200 will be delivering the work, including an upgrade to the CBD station’s concourse and platforms, with a less cluttered concourse and wider ticket gate area and also new lighting, new tiling, an overhaul of retail outlets and way-pointing signage to help customers move around the station easier.

Passenger services will be maintained throughout construction and Wynyard Station will remain open for business during the upgrade.

“We have developed construction techniques that reduce the impact on the station to a minimum whilst ensuring the project is completed as quickly as possible and the station is returned to its full operating status”, Ben said.

“The project is technically complex and challenging because we need to deliver the whole scope of works whilst keeping the station live, operational – and most importantly, safe for workers, commuters and staff.”
